Changing the MTU (Improves MS/ ping)

Post  Keo on 30/03/12, 07:22 pm

I know most have done this, but this is for those who haven't and don't know how to

How to change your MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit)

What this does, is basically changes the maximum amount of memory allowed in a packet sent per frame over a network. Therefor, improves the speed for video downloading, but mostly MMOs. This will reduce your ping by 10-70, depending on which type of service provider you posses.

Let's get started

First, you'll need to open up Registry Edit. An easy way to do this is to open the run command (Hotkey: WINDOWS+R) and type in "regedit" without the quotations.

Once that opens, you'll see many folders on the left of the window. Now your job is to find [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\
Interfaces\[Adapter ID]]

You will have 1-7 adapter IDs under interfaces. One of them is the correct one. But, since it can be a little complicated for beginners to find the correct one, let's just edit each one. This will not damage anything, or make anything worse. Simple, the one that's not yours will not effect you or anyone else on your network.

The next step -can- be difficult! So read closely. You will need to find the value "MTU." If there isn't one, simply create one in the adapter ID folder. It is a DWORD value. There is a difference. Once you create the folder, name it MTU (CAPS DO MATTER.) Once that's done, right click the value and press "MODIFY" and check the "decimal" box before typing in a value. When it's checked, type in one of the below values depending on your ISP.

-576 - Dial-up Connections
-1492 - PPPoE Broadband Connections
-1500 - Ethernet, DSL and Cable Broadband Connections

Once you got the value typed in, click okay or whatever is there prompting that the value is complete being edited. Do this for all of your adapter IDs, in case you don't know your correct one, as stated above. If some reason, you don't there's a change but it made it worse, (has happened 2/10 times for dial-up connections, that I've tested atleast) simply go back to the MTU values and instead of 1500,1492, or 576, put in "0xffffffff" (that's the value to change it back to default.)

And now is the easy part to finish it off and have it activated, you simply close down the registry edit once you've got it all, (importing/ exporting is NOT required, or recommended) and then restart your computer.

If there are any questions, feel free to ask in the thread here. But please, I beg of you, read this thoroughly, multiple times if needed before asking a question!

An easier way of changing your MTU without having to go through all those steps is to:
1. Create a new txt file
2. Paste the following into it: netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=xxxx store=persistent (where xxxx is the desired MTU value. I use 256 for mabi)
3. Save the file and change the .txt of the text file to .bat
4. Run the .bat file

If you're running Windows XP you'll need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. For Windows 7 just restart mabi if it's already on.

Also for convenience, make 2 bat files. Made the MTU of one 256 (or whatever number you want it to be) and the second one 1500 (default MTU) and just run when you want to switch back and forth.

There Is another way that you can change you MTU, along with a few other things.. If you go to SpeedGuide.net and download the TCPOptimizer you can do more than just lower MTU, it will properly disable nagle and a few other things. If you want to try this and need some help just add me and PM me, and I can help you out, since theres a lot of settings it a pain to type them all out onto a reply. Enjoi~ <:
