Memo's Application Empty Memo's Application

Post  Omem 15/02/16, 06:17 pm

Hello everyone! I want to apologize in advance for my forum name. For some reason I was unable to take the name "Memo" so I guess I am stuck with "Omem" instead. With that explanation aside, I will jump right into it!

In-Game Name: Memo (pronounced "Mee-mo")

This has been my nickname in game out of game for a long time. When I was a kiddo I never used the "I" pronoun, instead I would say "me" wants that or "memo" wants that. It has stuck ever since.

Total Level and # of rebirths: 8.2k lvl and 122 rbs

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

How active are you in game?:

Currently, I am an active user of the game who logs on at least twice a week and normally spends 2-3 hours in game at a time.

Joined any previous guilds? If yes, which one(s) and why are you looking for another guild?

-Paperwings: 3 years
-luckychannel: 2 years

Before I joined Paperwings, I used to hop from guild to guild like they were going out of style. Because I joined these guilds 8 years ago, I have forgotten their names. Suffice to say, I was not a good fit for these early guilds, and they were not a good fit for me. Looking back, I find that much of my early Mabinogi experience was solo. I wanted to do everything on my own and thought that I would have more fun that way. It wasn't until I met a player named "flyingarrow" that I changed my mind. Flyingarrow asked me to join her then newly made guild Paperwings. Since it was my first time being a founding member of a guild, I decided to stick around and help the guild grow and expand. Doing so allowed me to grow as a player, as I was forced into a situation where I had to help and be helped by guild members. This interaction helped open me up to the joys of figuring out and solving problems as a team. I have taken these lessons to heart and applied them to the rest of my experiences in game and perhaps outside of game as well.

Luckychannel is a similar story to Paperwings. After Paperwings became defunct, I took a 2-year hiatus from the game. When I came back, some of my old guildmates had congregated around the Luckychannel guild. I joined in hopes of being able to both help out and be helped by the small social guild. I very much enjoyed Luckychannel, and I learned much from being in it. The leader "konata0" was an understanding person. She allowed me to stay in the guild when I told her I was going to be on hiatus again for school. When I came back a few months later, however, Luckychannel had lost its leader in an unfortunate accident and had become all but defunct. I have kept the name of Luckychannel on my avatar ever since, but now I believe it is time to move on. While I believe honoring my old leader is a good cause, I yearn for the same close-knit companionship that being in a guild gives. I want to have the same feeling of place working together as a team can give. That is why I am applying to dreams.

Edit: (I apologize if this is a little heavy. I kinda started writing and couldn't stop till the idea was complete. I feel like I have been needing to share this for awhile. Take it as you will.)

Why Dreams?:

I have known about the Dreams guild and interacted with many of the players who have come and went from the guild throughout my mabi career. From my interaction with current and former guild members I have thought two things.

1.) Dreams members are professional players
2.) Dreams members are "pro" players

By professional, I mean to say that all of the people who I have interacted with were kind, polite, and sociable people who conducted themselves in such a way so to give an air of professionalism.

By "pro", I mean to say that OMG80kDmgCritsWTFBBQSAUCE

By these two standards I believe that Dreams would be a good fit for me and I a good fit for Dreams. I enjoy being professional (sociable, kind, and (sometimes) polite) while also being "pro".

Who have referred you? The person who referred you must post in your application as recommendation (you need at least 2 referals):

A.) Lygel <- this guy needs to stop pretending he is shy cuz I know he isn't
B.) Cassa <- this girl needs no introduction I am sure

How long have you been playing?:

I have been playing off and on for about 8 years now. I wasn't around for the beta testing, but I was pretty darn close.

What kind of skills/accomplishment do you have?:

By far my most impressive accomplishments in game have been organizing and hosting Mabinogi Jam Sessions. I have been hosting jams for nearly all of my mabi career. Back when the "jam session" skill was not available in game, I used to have my jammers use an online atomic clock to sync instrument parts. Leading jam sessions has taught me many unique organizational skills which I employ in and outside of jam sessions. I have been known to organize large 10 song jam sessions with 5 to 8 different people and to be able to pull off the gig in the course of an hour or less. This of course could not be accomplished without the help of many skilled mabi musicians and players whom I have had the luxury of playing with throughout my mabi career.

While I am not versed in mml or any other music composition language, I am versed at transcribing music into mabinogi from other sites and sources. I have an impressive repertoire of songs, some of which I obtained from the now defunct site "mabimml.modev.jp."

As a side note, outside of mabi I am accomplished pianist, having been accepted into a few music conservatories only to decide not to pursue music as a profession. I would say the music is my passion, and that is why I am still playing this 8 year old game like it is going out of style.

Any other information you would like for us to know:

I am in general a light-hearted player looking to make new friends and have fun doing so. I am super sociable and usually have little trouble getting to know other players. I am sometimes oblivious of social etiquette and those who know me can tell you that I may sometimes commit faux pas. Fortunately, I receive criticism well and do not make the same blunder twice when told not to. Lastly, I am super excited to be applying to this guild and meeting all of you whom I have known and looked up to for some time! Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be here!

Memo's Application Empty Spooky Referral

Post  Omem 15/02/16, 07:38 pm

Edit: I forgot to mention I have another reference from someone I go way back with. My friend and fellow (spooky) jammer Ghostlybard. <- this dude knows whats up. He is both a ghost and a bard!

I have had the honor of knowing Ghostlybard since I first joined Mabi. He was with me when I first started to learn how to jam and has always been there to lend a helping instrument. Many a jam session would have been lost had it not been for him!

Thank you for your application and considering our guild to make as a new home. If it's okay could I please request you to post the picture of your rebirth window as well- I understand you wrote it but we do ask for both please.

I am sorry to hear of your previous guilds situation- that is both very tough and very sad to hear of though it seems that you show a great deal of respect to that name and that guild and that is wonderful to see.

We can be professional outside out- inside we are a goofy bunch of close knitted people though and if you can handle some sexual remarks, jokes, and the quite times while members are in other games or school/work has taken them then you perhaps may find yourself fitting in just fine.

Aside from being a pianist what other things in life do you enjoy?
What goals do you have in Mabi for your character?
Last for now, If I were to say "reforges = high damage = good players" how do you translate that and would you agree or disagree, why?

Good luck with your application Memo.

"We can be professional outside out- inside we are a goofy bunch of close knitted people though and if you can handle some sexual remarks, jokes, and the quite times while members are in other games or school/work has taken them then you perhaps may find yourself fitting in just fine."

Phew, I am glad to hear that, now I can take off this suffocating suit and tie.... Being professional is hard work on the neck I tell ya~

Aside from being a pianist what other things in life do you enjoy?

I enjoy videogames (in retrospect is that a silly answer for a MMO guild?) I also love eating new and different types of cultural food! I just had "mapo tofu" for the first time and nearly burned my tongue off!

What goals do you have in Mabi for your character?

Since I have been gone the skills Lighting Rod and Inspiration have been added. My immediate goals as of now are to r1 these skills. My long term goals include ranking up puppetry and getting a crisis hat in order to run MA more efficiently.

Another goal of mine is to properly learn how to Girgashi (is that how you spell it?) I was around when the run first came out, but without a functional guild, I never had the chance to dig into it.

If I were to say "reforges = high damage = good players" how do you translate that and would you agree or disagree, why?

I would translate it by breaking it down into its component premises.

First reforges = high damage

This can be all but assumed as long as reforges in question are the "right" reforges. Meaning if I given enough time and money, someone who invests in reforges will do more damage than someone who hasn't. The unfortunate part of this is that the reforges are randomly generated and no one is guaranteed a good roll on their reforge. Because of this many players (including myself) have not invested much time and money into reforges and instead choose to better their character through other means that are guaranteed (such as lvling and skill ranking). Once we hit a skill cap, however, there is no other way to better your avatar without having reforges. I personally am hitting that cap and am looking into reforges (like a crisis hat ect.) in order to better my character.

high damage = good players

So this part is a little less convincing. I am going to translate "good players" to "good dungeon runners." (Cuz many of the mabinogi jammers are good "players", but have nothing in the ways of high damage). Having high damage is certainly useful and many times can make the difference in a dungeon run. However, this is not to say that high damage makes one a good dungeon runner. Being a good runner involves much more than having good damage. You need teamwork, efficiency, willingness to lead, willingness to follow, and an overall understanding of the dungeon or mission you are running. On the list of things that a good dungeon runner needs, damage is certainly on there, but cannot make a good player by itself.

So to cap it all together I would shorten the phrase to "reforges make better dungeon runners" I would not agree with this statement on the grounds that reforges cannot account for factors (other than damage) that good dungeon runners need.

(inb4 strawman argument fallacy) D:

I'm glad that we share some similarities with the look on reforges etc. I'm a very old fashioned player so skill ranks/lvls, stats, enchants are definitely the foundation of my character herself, over time I have put a small effort into reforges for their conveniences but I do not believe one has to have them to be "good". Thank you for your opinions and answering my questions.

Greetings Memo,

Welcome to the Dreams application process.

Mabinogi has certainly changed over the years. How do you feel the teamwork aspect has changed?

Do you think the same principles apply?

What is something you learned at the beginning of your Mabinogi playing that you still implement today?

What was your first interaction with a Dreams member? With whom? When did this interaction occur? What were you original thoughts? (please be honest)

Even bruised bananas can be useful, what would be your best use of a bruised banana?

Hey Jeweldragona!

Mabinogi has certainly changed over the years. How do you feel the teamwork aspect has changed?

Well, as a magic user main, I know that teamwork has been focused on more as the years have gone by with the introduction of the skill blaze. Devcat specifically made the 420blazeit skill in such a way as to not allow the skill's full potential to be utilized without having some sort of team work component. This team work component has only increased in value as other skills such as puppetry have allowed more players to tap into the usefulness of blaze.

It is also good to note that Girgashiy can be considered as another attempt to further promote teamwork in mabinogi. While I haven't had many personal experiences with the raid, I understand that the run is heavily team oriented. I applaud Devcat for their constant forward thinking in finding new and interesting ways to increase the depth of their game and reward players for working together as a team.

Do you think the same principles apply?

Yup! I find that as time goes on, I learn more and more ways to 420blazeit with my friends. ;D

What is something you learned at the beginning of your Mabinogi playing that you still implement today?

When I was a baby memo I found that jammers respond better to positive feedback. I would say things like "good job bob", "great jam session", or "nice ass". I think that it is always important to make the people around you feel like they are special even when you are only keeping them around as eye-candy. People enjoy your company more and are more apt to work together on a collaborative project like jam sessions when they feel that they are contributing to the team in a unique way and are honestly needed.

What was your first interaction with a Dreams member? With whom? When did this interaction occur? What were you original thoughts? (please be honest)

Hmm... I would have to say my very first interaction with dreams was during the whole "pake" fiasco. This was the first time the Dreams guild was on my radar. I don't remember specifically the people involved, but I do remember silly things happening like dead NPCs in the streets of dunby or items on the housing board that were obviously duped. I don't honestly know Dream's involvement was a wild baseless rumor or if it was just the work of a few renegade players, but I have noticed that steps have been taken to prevent anymore abuse of game breaking mods and hacks since then. I would gander to guess that many of the players from that time have either stopped playing because they are old as dirt like me, or have have found that game breaking hacks ruins the fun of playing and gets you the ban hammer faster than Thor and Captain America could throw at you combined. Since that time though, I have only had the had the most pleasurable of encounters with Dreams guild members.

As a side note, I have had my fair share of contact with game altering glitches and exploits. I have since stopped using such things. My personal opinion is that exploits and hacks in the end only hurt you as a player insofar that you alienate yourself from other players and destroy the way the game was intended to be played. That being said, I do love me some benign mods like ~Tiara~ (what beautiful lady she is, if only she didn't cackle like a maniac when I open her up).

Even bruised bananas can be useful, what would be your best use of a bruised banana?

Stick that banana in bread brah!

Hello Memo and welcome to application process!!

Questions:
I may have miss reading but I am having trouble with this, are you a boy or girl? Your character is a girl but your name reminds me Guillermo who's short name is Memo

Do you believe family is only a blood thing or blood has nothing to do with family? (please explain)

How would you act if someone, not in purpose, offends your beliefs somehow?

What kind of series, movies or anime do you like the most and why?

If you had the money to travel to anywhere, where would you go and what would yo do there?

Let's say there's a new dungeon where an item there is so rare that it's worth 50M gold. At the end of the chest that item is in your chest, before starting the run everyone agreed who ever gets the item keeps it. You don't need the item but you need around 30M to buy something you have been looking for a year. Someone in that run has been looking for the item for a while (around 6 months). Only 4 people where in that run. What would you do? Options:
1. Sell the item and keep the gold, before the run everyone knew that the item was going to belong to whoever found it so it's yours, you'll be richer and you can finally get that item you need.
2. Give to that person who needs it, the person would be very happy to finally get it.
3. Sell the item and split the gold, in that way everyone gets something.

That's all for now, good luck!

Heya Aurkus!

Thx for clearing up the problem with my "Omem" name. I will jump right into these questions now!

I may have miss reading but I am having trouble with this, are you a boy or girl? Your character is a girl but your name reminds me Guillermo who's short name is Memo.

*Le gasp* I was almost certain you could tell I am a **** from the way I talk! I am so offended!

(jkjkjk) Lol, you did not miss a thing. Infact, you are very perceptive. I purposefully use gender neutral pronouns in order to not give away my closely guarded secrete. I find that ambiguity is the spice of life. ;D I will give you a hint though, my name is Anh-Minh which is also a gender neutral name in Vietnamese~

Also, who the buttercups is Guillermo and why does he use my name? D:

Do you believe family is only a blood thing or blood has nothing to do with family? (please explain)

I feel that family has little to do with blood. Don't we all take someone who isn't blood related as our spouse in life? (well, a few people DO take blood relations as spouses, but that's just silly).

How would you act if someone, not in purpose, offends your beliefs somehow?

If it wasn't on purpose, I wouldn't sweat it. I work with many different kinds of people on a daily basis and its not worth getting worked up over such things that are bound to happen.

I personally think that beliefs are like having a penis (which I may or may not have). It is good to have one and it is even good to be proud of it. But please don't wave it around in public, and please don't shove it down my kid's throat. D:

What kind of series, movies or anime do you like the most and why?

*steps onto soapbox*

"Anime was a mistake."

-Hayao Miyazaki (this is a bogus misquote)

I sorta have this love hate relationship with anime. While I admire the few works that aspire to communicate truths about the human condition, there are so many shows out there that feed into a culture of fans who even Great Grandmaster Super Sayian Hokage Miyazaki would call degenerate ingrates. Perhaps I am being a tad self deprecating, but I honestly feel like the anime industry has not taken any large strides as an artistic medium in 15 years. It is, however, possible that we are in that transition period where the next generation of anime artists, writers, and producers have yet to hit the scene. Perhaps the next generation of anime will be more inspired and a cultural revolution will occur, much like how the comicbook industry has enjoyed blockbuster hits in the last 6 years.

*steps off soapbox*

To answer your question. I adore most works done by Miyazaki. "Mononoke Hime" is by far my favorite work. As for movies, I can't say I have a favorite, but I really enjoyed watching "X-men: Days of Future Past" this past summer. I wish that Sir Patrick Stewart would come to me in future vision and motivate me to be a hero too. D:

If you had the money to travel to anywhere, where would you go and what would yo do there?

Vietnam son! Squatter toilets all the way! I would eat delicious Vietnamese food and use squatter toilets (which are good for your bowls I hear). Very Happy

From the available options, I would choice option one. I am not the kinda person who would go out into the the streets of dunby and drop all their cash on the ground so that other players can have a running start. As long as the "who ever get it keeps it" clause was agreed upon from the beginning of the dungeon, I would keep it.

We have all been there though, in a situation where a friend or fellow guildy needs something that you want to sell, but does not have the money for it. Or perhaps the other way around, where you need something that someone else has. I know I would not be the player I am today if my old guild mates did not allow me to use their Racoon Cub enchanted suit to train back in the day. Either way, I would prolly find a middle ground between the option of giving the item to the runner and keeping it for myself. I would perhaps try to sell or trade it to the runner who needs it and give them exclusive rights to buy or come up with an item for trade for it before putting it on the market. Who knows? The runner might have the 30m item I am looking for.~

Banana bread is by far the easy way out.

When did you first meet your references and how long have you known them?

Most of the times you have been active, so has the guild you have been in. How would you react if a guild's activity dropped occasionally?

What single most attribute do you bring into the game from your real life self?

Is you game self opposite from your real self in any ways?

Don't loosen that tie too much, you are still in the interview! Twisted Evil

Eep!

When did you first meet your references and how long have you known them?

Ghostlybard: I have known GB for nearly as long as I have played mabi. He and I go way back. He was around back when the jam skill wasn't available if memory serves. GB and I used to run the old dungeons like Ciar back before SMs weren't available. The dude is spooky, what can I say?

Cassa: I recently (re-)met(?) Cassa this past week. For some reason I feel like I knew her before then, but she assures me I haven't. Either way, it is only just recently that I have truly gotten to know her. The details may still be foggy for me, but she is wonderful lady who is cut from the same stuff I am!

Lygel: I also recently met Lygel this past week. I ran MA with him and we had a blast. Later on, he sniffed me. I ran away. I don't know why people this he is shy, cuz I will have you know he is not! D:

Most of the times you have been active, so has the guild you have been in. How would you react if a guild's activity dropped occasionally?

I have no problem with the occasional midweek ghost-town that might arise from busy schedules. I understand that everyone here has their own responsibilities outside of mabi and that is super respectable. As long as the guild is not inactive for more than a month, I would not have any concerns. Even if it was inactive for more than a month, as long as the guild is not defunct I would try to get in contact with Keomio or other leaders to try and recruit some new life in the guild. I have been in a defunct guild that has no chance of ever coming back for unfortunate reasons. I would like the chance to help recruit and bring new life into a guild that has the potential to do so.

What single most attribute do you bring into the game from your real life self?

Both in game and out of game I am a super positive and social person. I enjoy meeting new people and making friends. I have always found the most enjoyment from being a social butterfly~

Is your game self opposite from your real self in any ways?

Well other than the white hair and red eyes, I think we are pretty similar! My avatar owns a baby-grand piano, which makes me jealous. D:

As a side note, I have had my fair share of contact with game altering glitches and exploits. I have since stopped using such things. My personal opinion is that exploits and hacks in the end only hurt you as a player insofar that you alienate yourself from other players and destroy the way the game was intended to be played.

On to the more difficult questions.

Taking from the quote above, what specifically have you done?

How did you benefit from this?

How have you changed?

When did this change come about?

This is a very touchy subject, so please be as detailed as possible.

What specifically have you done regarding hacks and exploits?

I have never been tech savvy enough to utilize pake or other hacks from the client side. I have, however experienced some glitches regarding the game server side. The most exploitative of these (and the one I used the most often) involved using the synthesis materials for Dorren's Request. It used to be possible to pull these materials out of the mission and save them for later use. This would allow players to farm those materials for hours on end and then come back at anytime to level their character. This was far more efficient than just simply doing the mission over and over. One could easily level their character to 80 or higher during the G9 era in no less than an hour or so.

How did you benefit from this?

To put it into perspective, I had never gotten my character to level 80 until I utilized this glitch. With 3 weeks of doing normal SMs and dungeons, the average level I would only be able to rebirth at around 60. After I was introduced to this method of farming Dorran's Request materials, I was able to reach upwards of level 100 before 3 weeks were up.

How have you changed? and When did this change come about?

I stopped using this exploit around the g11 era. I would like to say I did so because I had some noble revelation regarding how my actions had ethical and moral consequences. I was no such virtuous player back then. I stopped utilizing the exploit when the player who taught me it was IP banned from mabi. I was afraid that with my association to this player, I would be a target for scrutiny by Nexon so I cleaned up my act. I stopped using Dorren's request all together for a few months and made sure to not associate with any of the known hackers and modders. To this day I do not know if the reason this player was banned was because of the Dorren's Request exploit or because of some other more insidious client side hack. Either way, I have been on the straight and narrow ever since.

I am not proud of my involvement with exploiting Mabinogi. After having years of time to reflect upon it, I have come to realize that my actions do have consequences against the player-base as a whole. Utilizing anything that the game maker did not intend hurts all the other players who play the game properly. Because of this, I apologize to any player whom I have negatively affected in anyway during my involvement with this exploit.

I just want to step in and say I really appreciate your honesty regarding the exploit.

Personally knowing how long ago it was and that you swear to have avoided that kind of action after seeing another get banned I have no problems in seeing that you have changed and won't do it again.

As you probably understand, exploiting, hacking etc is not tolerated in Dreams but we can forgive people who did so in the past given they have provided evidence that they won't do it again, and also on the severity of the actions performed. In the grand scale of things what you did is more of a minor problem as it did not affect anyone else negatively. (In my opinion)

Thank you Kneeshot!

It means a lot to know that I was able to convey my honest feelings and have them reciprocated. Now if only I could pick up sweethearts using the same technique! Such is life~

Memo,

Given that you used this exploit to easily level, to at least level 80 as you stated, your RB ratio is fairly low (67.18).

What level do you currently try to reach before RB?

Do you have any goals for level and exploration level?

What do you try to do to gain your levels today?
